This is a male. The female does not boast a bobbing plume. We have a burn pile we couldn't get to and we think a covey of quail are now residing at the bottom. They were once very common birds around here. They are fun to watch as they zig zag run for cover never lifting a feather to fly. I hadn't seen any for a while and wondered. I was so happy to see this quail basking in the morning sun!
Such a stunning, unique bird! I love his little headdress plume.
ReplyDeleteIs this a male, or are both sexes familiar?
The striped white plumage on the chest, head and nape are striking!
What a joy to see :)
