Shaving it close

Heads have it.  I just can't stop.  This is Shadow.  I haven't made up my mind about the stumps. I will work on the eyes later when the clay is dryer.  It is a companion piece to Cruel Cut.  These heads are all about bald-face truths or lies. How does one tell from looking at a face whether truth be told or not?

Don't it make my brown eyes blue

My garage studio needs cleaning again, but not before I finish a couple of things first.  My studio is 2/3rds of 1/2 of a two car garage. As I make a mess the size of a whole garage, contain in a space of 1/3rd of a car or 1/3 of the garage, how much of the studio do I need to clean? 

Answer: All of it. 

This head will remain plain and probably gray.  The eyes are important on this piece.  Eyes Have It.  Will see....

Bisque it and cream

Bone dry and ready for bisque firing....haven't decided on the polka dots. This one hangs on the wall.  I am getting ready to make a free standing one hopefully about 18" tall.

Persimmon moon with terra cotta sky

Autumn days are coming quickly.  I had some time to make some clay figs and persimmons.  I love when they are dry cold to the touch.  This clay persimmon looks satiny and creamy as though a moon on a fall night.  I think I will fire it without any terra sigillata or engobe.  Moonlight persimmon, a ghostly presence of a autumn harvest.

Terra cotta harvest

Here comes my season.  Autumn.  Fall.  Rich earthy colors.  Deep shadows.  Clear blue skies.  Crisp morning air.  Harvesting thoughts.

Meanwhile I am running out of room in the studio to stow pieces going to an exhibition this November.  I have taken over Herr Reinhart's work table.  Right now, Bee Puppet, Middle Child Idol, Lucky Fellow sit atop a large cabinet.  They are beginning to look like a crowd at a Mardi Gras.  Or a Fellini film.

Time to wedge some terra cotta clay.

throwing little lumps of clay part 2

This morning I was very eager to get some throwing done.  I looked through my stack of clay boxes and found I only had 1/2 bag of B-Mix with grog.  No porcelain, either.  So I will start again tomorrow with a red clay.  I will get about 6 to 7 little jars with lids with the 1/2 bag.  Then I will clean up.  It's Labor Day after all.  I will spend the rest of day a lady of leisure.

throwing little lumps of clay

Even though I have several more sculptural pieces I need to finish I  also need to make some jars for the Holiday Market at Pence.  I usually throw very simple shapes that need no foot trimming.  I do not cut off either.  I use masonite type batts which allows some wicking and movement.  To avoid S-cracks,  I make sure I compress the inside bottom.  I check on the jars as they dry.  When the lip of the jar is dry to the touch I flip them over (batt still attached) to dry some more. Appendages are added at this point---before I flip the jar.   Cover loosely with plastic and wait until the jar pops off. It is still leatherhard so I can add engobe or terra sigillata or slip with no problem.  While the jars are drying, I throw the lids.  I center about 5 lbs of clay. From this I make about 5-6 lids.  The last bit becomes a bowl.  The lids are trimmed with its intended jar.  It is a marriage made in clay heaven.  I love little jars or containers or little vases. Little vases can hold pens that write poetry or pencils that sketch a landscape. And the jars, these little intimate containers, are meant to hold surprises. They do hold surprises.  Just think they started off as little lumps of clay.
