Fauna's Maquette's Maquette

Decisions. Decisions. Big ears, little ears.  Big eyes, little eyes.  Slip or not slip. If only a maquette can help.

I had to adjust the ears.  Sometimes I forget to measure.  My kiln is only 24" deep with a raised bottom shelf. Taller pieces need some planning and cutting into parts.  This piece I have to worry about the width, too.  There are two more under plastic wrap.  Ear-less.  This one is more or less the maquette's maquette.

Herr (tee hee) is just looking at those ears and wondering how I'm going to get it in the kiln. I work with clay.  I have faith...and maybe a yardstick somewhere.   Now I'm going to make a little kiln god just for good measure (tee hee.)

  1. I've been rabbit crazy - now I'm in love -- these are fabulous! Hope they are all happy in the kiln - can't wait to see them finished.

    1. Getting them in the kiln is the trick....a let's pull a rabbit out of the hat sort of thing...

  2. What a wonderful personality this rabbit has, a sweet and sly female look to me. I finally got a photo of the cottontail in our back yard that comes out every evening to eat the grasses and lawn flowers.

I have done the same thing making something and then realizing I can't get it in the kiln. I am fascinated with how you make them in parts and wondering how you attach them after firing?

    1. I usually plan out where I am going to cut a piece before I build. I built up completely and then with a hack saw blade cut through when leather-hard. A tall flange is added on bottom section. The top section is replaced over the flange for fit, then removed to dry. Sometimes I need to sand the flange after the firing. I use a two part epoxy, PC 7 or PC 11. These are opaque so I am careful that the resulting line is part of the story.

    1. This one will go into the kiln whole. Number two will have straight up ears, so the ears will be detached. Number three has smaller ears. Each will have the kiln to itself with its maquette. Keep fingers crossed!

  4. Love these wonderful, mysterious characters! Looking like they have a (fluffy) tale to tell :)
I wonder what secrets they hide down in their warren?

I was born in the Year of the Rabbit, and am partial to rabbits and hares.

What will you do with your delightful little maquette Charlene?

    1. The maquette's maquette has a hole in the back for wall hanging. There are arms and legs. Eventually sky blue head and a terra cotta chemise? Or the other way around? Maybe an armful of calla lillies or a little found locket? Oh, the possibilities.....

  5. I'm sure that the two mysterious rabbits have their own story. I wonder where they come from...somewhere over the rainbow? Her(His?) eyes are really great!! Also wonder what she is looking at. Can't wait to see them finished!!

    1. Her(His)eyes! Love it....thank you, sapphire. My kiln technician and resident art critic Herr Reinhart loves the big eye, I on the other hand love the edginess of the little eye. They are drying and waiting their turn to get into my little kiln. It will take a few weeks.
