Early morning art walk

Early morning only a few people in this area of Golden Gate Park.  This photo is fuzzy.  I just loved all the verticals--the signs giving directions so very negative against the calm beauty of a tea garden--I have a quirky sense of humor.

this painting, Two Women Running on the Beach (1922) is 65 x 43 cm (25 1/2 x 17 in)  small but filled its frame with such exuberance I could feel it

"A smell of mould and neglect caught me by the throat. I was so depressed that I would have chosen to leave immediately," Picasso said of the museum. "But I forced myself to stay, to examine these masks, all these objects that people had created with a sacred, magical purpose, to serve as intermediaries between them and the unknown, hostile forces surrounding them, attempting in that way to overcome their fears by giving them colour and form. And then I understood what painting really meant. It's not an aesthetic process; it's a form of magic that interposes itself between us and the hostile universe, a means of seizing power by imposing a form on our terrors as well as on our desires. The day I understood that, I had found my path."  Pablo Picasso--sourced from an article by Andrew Meldrum

  1. What a great tour and a great quote by Picasso. You've taken me down memory lane, I used to live in San Francisco and loved golden gate park, the tea gardens, the de young and the arboreteum.

  2. Hello Linda--Small world! I used to live in Florida. Seeing the work of Picasso up close was so much better than in an art history book! Golden Gate Park has that primeval feeling of wildness, although all planted by landscapers. Maybe it's the fog!
